Opportunities for Community Service

Announcement: Hours from Second Harvest Food Bank will NOT be accepted as they refuse to sign the FUSD paperwork required for our service learning hours. The FUSD form is required for hours to be logged, so please locate another non-profit organization!

What does NOT count as volunteer hours?

  • Volunteering for a teacher to help with TA tasks: grading, decorating, cleaning classrooms, etc.
  • Volunteering for a for-profit entity- example: a dentist's office.
  • Anything completed during school hours for a school program/club when school is in session. All volunteering must occur outside of school hours.
  • Any hours required for iCare.
  • Court mandated service hours
  • Opportunities that require an exchange of money, goods, or donations for hours.
  • Fundraising for an event where the money goes back to a club, organization, or team that a student is a member of.

  • Religious work or work that promotes a religious organization, including maintenance of grounds and meals connected to a service.

How can I check if the organization is a 501(c)3?

It's easy! Go to: charitynavigator.org OR to https://apps.irs.gov/app/eos/ to search by the organization's name- if you can't find them by name you can ask for the organization's EIN number and search for that instead. ALWAYS double check to make sure the organization is a 501(c)3 before you volunteer so you don't waste your time!

Alameda County Library Volunteer Opportunity

Teen Volunteer - Clerical Support The Alameda County Library Foundation (ACLF) has a need for on-going clerical support. Tasks may include filing, preparing mailings for various Fundraising Campaigns and/or light data entry occasionally. Ideally teens would commit to working 1.5 - 3 hours per week between Monday and Thursday. Work hours would be approximately 3:30pm – 5:00pm.

The Foundation will work with teens to determine best schedules within the above timeframe. The project(s) are underway year round. ACLF is located in the Library Administration building adjacent to the Fremont Main Library; 2450 Stevenson Blvd., Fremont, CA 94538.

ACLF is the fundraising arm of the Alameda County Library. We support 16 branches and the Bookmobile and work closely with our County libraries to help garner financial support for programs, services, books, materials and capital. We also manage several fun and innovative fundraisers throughout the year to engage the community, build awareness and encourage Library support. Applications can be downloaded from the ACLF website. Visit us online for more info: www.aclf2.org/volunteer
